Osprey in Port Moody

Okay, I don't know what I'm doing, but there's only one way to learn.  Right?

[Syndi-Rexvillians: please see message at bottom]

My neighbour got some great shots of the osprey nesting in our area.  It's a short walk along the ocean from here.  Let's see if I can put in one of his pics.

Hey--that looks like success!  Let's try the one with THREE osprey in one picture.

Amazing, eh?  Thanks, Jack.  (I asked him about posting, and he said the more that know how wonderful things are around here, the better.  Please do NOT filch images.  Is that even possible?  If you know about this and know how I can prevent it, please comment.)

It is definitely spring, if you get my drift...

I have a nice new camera that I like, but it doesn't have one of those .5 metre-long zoom lenses and it doesn't weight 10kg.  I'm glad I have a neighbour with those things and who's happy to share.

But if you've stumbled onto this blog and are now expecting more photos of this quality, well, just move along.

Here's a pic of a black bear seen last weekend.  The dog and I walked right by him/her, dog in heel because she was giving clear signs that something was around, though I thought it was a coyote, as they're common enough.  If I'd seen the bear sooner, I would not have chosen to walk within two metres of him/her.  Pic taken after passing.

Syndi-Rexites--hullo!  I hope you make it here, which is a stupid thing to say, since if you're here, you're here.  (Non-syndi-Rexites welcome, too!  As are non-Rexites!)  I've been ridiculously busy the last while, so have not kept up with Rex's blog.

I recall, in syndi-time of a couple of weeks ago, discussion of the osprey, but then the post I'd put in with links to photos disappeared and it seemed too much to get caught up.  Somebody (@SIS, @Ginger?) guessed the photos were taken at Deep Cove.  Very close.  They were taken from the Rocky Point Pier in Port Moody, which is just a bit further east (and still on Burrard Inlet).

Okay, I'm just going to (try to) post this.  And see what happens.  Happy Victoria Day, everybody!

  2. @Red Valerian...YOU MAKE ME PROUD!!! Wonderful photos - although if I were walking our pups and seen a bear, I might have done what they normally do in the woods.
You must have time now that school is over, no? Do remember that those of us in real time always want to look in the past - to see what dumb things we might have said!!
I hope you keep it going' I, for one, will check in....Adios amiga.

  3. Hi everyone. Sorry to be a bit slow here! @Gill I.P.--I'm teaching three courses for the summer term, so it's still a busy time. *Next* summer will be less so.

    1. Red, nice job with your blog! And thank you for the Robin video that was so fun to watch. One year a pair of seagulls nested outside of my office window. I was amazed at how dedicated they were at parenting. My ospreys are at the top of a 50' pole, so I can't see them grow up like you can.

Last night, after a few glasses of wine I thought it would be fun to meet the PacificNWers sometime. It wouldn't have to be a CW fest, it could just be lunch and a beer somewhere on the waterfront. Maybe Dirigonzo would even come to the Left Coast to meet the other Syndielanders.

  4. Hey Red - got here very roundaboutly, after checking out Dirigonzo's moose profile pic, and seeing his link here!
Nice job - one must start somewhere!

@Gill...lol re: your reaction to seeing a bear in the woods...

Red - a couple of years back, puzzle spouse saw, and got a picture of, a pretty darn big black bear on our back deck. He came straight up to the slider. The cats ran for cover, Phil ran for the camera. Here in Western Connecticut, they are a fairly unusual sight.

(I generally read syndiland comments on my "smart"phone. Posting from there is so painful that I rarely do it. And the capchas - fuggedaboutit! But I always look forward to your insights, even if I don't always remember the details of each puzzle.)
